Plain Tile & Trim

Welcome to DESIGNS IN TILE's Plain Tile & Trim page.

We appreciate your interest in Designs In Tile. We have served the restoration and new construction community since 1978. Our popularity and the fact that we refuse to compromise the quality of the work that we produce forces us to adapt some of our business practices.

Our production schedule is completely booked until 2008. We are no longer accepting jobs on a wait list.

We will not be providing takedowns, custom designs (new commissioned tile art or layout of tile installations) or custom glaze matching until further notice.

We are only selling overage from other current and prior jobs at this time. Specials, Overruns & Closeouts

Please call if you have any questions and/or concerns.

We, as always, appreciate your continued support.

Designs shown in the Decorative Tile Lines section represent fully coordinated patterned borders, corners and field tiles in historic reproduction motifs or traditional patterns. The patterns may be used together and modular elements may be arranged to fit almost any architectural design. These designs usually represent only a part of the installation. Often, there were no sources for coordinating, plain, undecorated field tile and/or trim. If you found the most wonderful decorated tile, you had to settle for plain tile that was not the same size (the grout joints wouldn't line up), not the same thickness (the planes of the field tile and decorated tile were not level), or not the same edge treatment (some tiles were square-edged, while others had a "pillowed" - or rounded - edges). These are not desirable characteristics of a beautiful tile installation.

Fully coordinating decorative tile and plain field tile and trim can elevate a plain tile installation into a work of art. DESIGNS IN TILE is pleased to be able to offer such products. Our Portfolio of Tile Installations shows many other examples of beautiful decorative tile combined with coordinating field tile and trim.

Plain field tile in the style of Victorian or Arts & Crafts period reproductions and adaptations in many styles are produced on a per job basis.

Victorian styled tiles are generally square-edged, white body wall tiles fabricated in a 6" x 6" modular size (true 6" x 6", 3" x 6", 1-1/2" x 6") often with high gloss majolica glazes. The 3" x 6" tile is often used for wainscots and may be referred to as "wainscot" tile or "subway" tile. The tiles are very regular and can be set with a minimal grout joint (1/16" - 3/32").

Our most popular color is "Historic White" -- a glaze that has been matched to old historic tiles sent to us, although other colors are available. A full complement of standard and decorative molded tile trim is also available. Prices are dependent on color and quantity.

A specialty tile in the same category is known as MAJOLICA fireplace tile. Custom sized, square edge 1-1/2" x 6" or 1-1/4" x 6" (or custom sized including 1" x 3"), was often used for Victorian fireplace surrounds. These majolica glazes are high gloss and semi-translucent, often with variations in color from dark to light within each tile.

Arts & Crafts period tiles were often hand-crafted, faience stoneware tiles in a variety of sizes. Due to the rustic, slightly irregular, hand-crafted nature, the tiles need to be set with a wider grout joint (nominal 3/16").

Reproduction and adaptation tiles can be made in the style of many Art Tile Studios of the 1910's and 1920's -- California Faience, Claycraft, Malibu, Tropico, Grueby, Rookwood, Mosaic Tile Co., Encaustic Tile Co. to name only a few.

Historic Tile Flooring

  • Cut-Tile Geometrics: Borders & Field Patterns. During the Victorian period, cut-tile geometrics (AKA "encaustic" tiles) set with narrow (1/16") grout joints were often used on floors in foyers, kitchens, sun rooms, porches and commercial buildings. Historically, there were many different patterns made up of different sizes, shapes and colors of cut-tile geometrics.

All of our cut-tile geometric work is developed on a custom order basis. We can fabricate a wide variety of patterns for fields and/or borders. We feature the Octagon & Dot pattern because it is the most economical cut-tile geometric floor to produce and by varying the colors of the octagons and dots you may develop many different looks. These three different colorways are only a starting point. Get creative or call us and we can help in the design process.

  • Historic Patterned Ceramic Mosaics: Fields and Borders. Also during the Victorian period, "sanitary" areas -- including bath floors -- were tiled with small, ceramic mosaic tiles produced in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. These tiles were made of unglazed, dust-pressed porcelain, approximately 1/4" thick and came mounted in sheets. The tiles were flat with sharp, square edges. Currently, manufacturing processes have been instituted to make these tiles with "cushioned" or "pillowed" edges which differs widely from the original. There is still a wide variety of colors, although sizes and shapes have been limited. DESIGNS IN TILE can use these "cushioned edge" tiles to produce custom field patterns and borders in designs to fit any application.

DESIGNS IN TILE also offers two patterns of square-edged porcelain mosaic tile. One is 1" hexagonal tiles in white and the other is a "spiral" pattern in black and white. Call the Studio for more information. We also offer many different styles of mosaics suitable for later architectural periods including the transitional bungalow and cut-tile geometrics that were used in Art Deco installations - each developed to suit your needs.
